Favourite fantasy worlds?
My favourite fantasy world has to be Lord of the Rings/Middle Earth. It's the fantasy I grew up on and I find nothing that is "hard" fantasy that compares to it. To be fair though, I've not read the ASoIaF books, but I've seen the Game of Thrones season 1 TV show. I like that a lot as well. I feel often times with fantasy that after Tolkien, it's hard to be completely original because fantasy is swords, armour, sometimes elves, orcs, and goblins... and it's just left up to the author to try and make an original story.

I really fell in love with Westeros. There's not many who understand mythology, but G.R.R Martin really knows his stuff. And I dare say, better than Tolkien.

I agree Westeros, WOT world and recently Michael Sulivan's worlds are even more detailed and awesome thatn LOTR... but one has to admit that good books can be done in a less detailed world, e.g. mistborn, black company ...
Re: Favourite fantasy worlds?
Tolkein's world will always be my first fantasy love I think. I did love the detail and mythos of Wheel of Time too.

I've never seen Dune, but from what I've heard, it's a nice blend of both

Re: Favourite fantasy worlds?
yall Forget that almost ANY moder world is BASED on tolkeins...and anakin you say it`s deeper/better that LOTRs..my sis here would disagree, because the depth of tolkiens world, all the spirts, etc, the elfs - it all has huge background, and even the GREAT G.R.R. Martin took most of his ideas from LOTR - I am sure of it.
But which is my favorite Fantasy world, its a very hard question, definatly not westeros (only if I am Lannister ), and Lotr is bit too depressing lol, I`m guessing it could be (YEAH) a Harry Potters one (if I am a wizard lol), but I really like the idea of star wars universe - so light sabers and force it is.

I used to know Sindarin, but I forgot it. Such a shame too. I was good at it (had journals written in it even) and on the verge of learning Quenya when I stopped.

I've got to say, I rather liked the Hunger Games world. With the 13 districts and the capitol.

I actually laughed out loud at that. I'm going to start referring to it as that from now on whenever it's mentioned.

Lord of the Rings and the whole Middle-Earth thing... I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. Next, that would be the Dune Universe. Nothing else in the SF genre even comes close to Dune. After that, mmmm, Clive Barker's Abarat books have a very unique fantasy world.

Tolkein wrote a pile of languages for his world and an entire history and creation myth for it. It`s all in the Simarillion. GRRM didn`t do anything like that so far as I know.

I know a few words in Sindarin and Quenya too but I never got into studying it or anything. Just the way it`s written and learning to pronounce it from the instructions would probably fry my brain. I wonder if people who speak languages other than English would have an easier time of it. The dh sound (as in Caradhras) always ties up my tongue
